Absolutely! Adults of every age begin to feel that it may just be too late to start with music lessons but that is simply not true. Students of all ages including mature adults benefit greatly from including music in their lives. We have several programs now for adult classes that usually take place in 6 to 8 week lengths that are full of adult learners having a lot of fun, not to mention lots of adults enjoying private lessons and some for years now. With respect to mental health, everything that applies to the young student regarding cognitive and motor skill development applies equally to the adult.
There have been a large number of recent studies that empirically demonstrate the correlation between involvement in music education and dramatically enhanced academic performance; some studies suggest as much as a 38% increase in academic performance overall. The music student is the recipient of a weekly private education that focuses on the individual and the acquisition of a sophisticated set of skills that can only be learned effectively within a private setting. Small motor skill development, hand/eye/ear co-ordination, systematic learning techniques, working within time frames, esthetics, form, language, all of these are taught in a course of music study and all translate to other disciplines. Music is unique as a learning discipline and this has been known since the dawn of education.
Schools in our district offer credits toward graduation for students who take exams through the Royal Conservatory or Associated Board. Click on this link to see RCM Exam levels required for High School Credits. Please consult your school counselor for specific guidelines.
South Island Distance Education and many private schools also offer funding for private lessons through our Academy. Contact your school counselor for information on applying for funding. Once approved, we will directly invoice your school.
We offer a selection of Workshops and Small Classes all year. This is a great way to get an introduction to music and a specific instrument or to supplement your study. Go to workshop and class pages for more info.
The majority of students have half hour private lessons weekly on their specified instrument at a given weekly time slot However there are also excellent options which include 45 minute and 1 hour lesson times weekly as well as shared times and small class and small group classes as well as our new Workshop Series.
There is no GST charged for music lessons. Parents can request a receipt for lesson fees at the end of the year for a tax exemption for children under age 16.
Take the time to review our teachers pages. Each of our teachers has chosen music as a life's work and their dedication to their art holds the same level of dedication that they have for their students.
