July 5, 2015
The Am (short for A minor) chord for guitar or any polyphonic instrument for that matter is an essential chord to have under your fingers. Below you’ll find the most common voicings and fingerings.

Common Fingers Between the Am chord and Em chord
When changing between any chords it’s important you pay special attention to the fingers in common between those chords. The above video demonstrates this clearly when changing between the Am chord and Em chord. Your second finger is in common and should not move. Moving that finger will only create extra work for you left hand.
Practicing an Am Chord on the guitar
First begin by carefully placing one finger at a time. Try playing each string with your fingers down and listen to the sound of each note. It should be clear and the string should have room to vibrate. If you are getting buzzes or not hearing any notes, try readjusting your fingers and make sure you’re playing right on the tips. This may take some practice, but if you stick with it you’ll get it.
Playing A minor and E minor
Try strumming just on the downbeats. 1 2 3 4. The point of this exercise is to get used to changing between these two chords, not to play fancy strumming patterns. That will come later.
